Dress shoes are those worn by both men and women to more formal events. However there are those that wear dress shoes on a daily basis for their occupation or for style. For women, almost all dress shoes have a high heel, but can have open or closed fronts and backs. Women’s dress shoes come in a variety of colors, designed to match dresses and stand out. Men’s dress shoes are typically made from one or more pieces of leather and can be laced, strapped or slip on.
An Athletic shoe is a general name for a shoe intended for physical exercise or activity, and is designed much differently than a dress shoe. Most athletic shoes provide support and cushion to comfort your feet, knees, and back during such strenuous activities. Cleats are a specific type of athletic shoe that has plastic studs or metal spikes on the bottom to increase grip for rapid mobility and reduced sliding.
Boat shoes are, if you may have guessed, shoes originally worn for use on boats. Today these casual shoes use a more contemporary moccasin design and may or may not have laces. In either case, they are usually constructed from water-proof leather or other durable fabric and in a wide variety of colors and styles.
Boots are typically a shoe that covers the foot - including the toes and ankle - and has a distinct heel. Initially boots were designed from a single piece of material, such as leather, rubber or canvas, in order to protect the feet from the elements. Today, boots come in a variety of styles and forms, ranging from work boots, recreational sports boots, dress boots and more.
Finding a spot between athletic and dress shoes is the casual shoe. These shoes are usually considered for every day use; whether that is at the work place or at an informal social event. Casual shoes generally focus on style and comfort, allowing for the wide variety of uses. As well, casual shoes hold no true form and thus can include sneakers, sliders and loafers.
Mules and Clogs are a type of open-backed shoe, predominantly for women. Known for the ease to place on and take off, these shoes have become increasingly popular. While these shoes have changed in both style and status over the centuries, they remain a popular and casual shoe. Many mules have an open toe, similar to the clog, and are referred to as slides.
Not all shoes are for everyday use and for special occasions you will need a special shoe. Costume shoes are for those that enjoy dressing up in a variety of costumes or just enjoy finding unique shoes. Depending upon the dance, the right shoe is required. Ballroom dancing shoes are an elegant, heeled shoe with a closed back and can have either a close or open front. These shoes are made from durable leather in order to withstand the constant motion of the dancer without breaking or loosening. Ballet shoes however are constructed from a lightweight satin, leather or canvas. These feature rubber bands to secure the foot.
Espadrilles are a wedge-shaped shoe: the sole increases in size from the toe to the heel to create a wedge shape. Specifically with espadrilles, the sole made of rope or a material designed to appear like rope due to the origins of the shoe. These shoes have become increasingly popular due to the wide variety of styles and colors afforded to wedge shoes. As well, the shoes can have an open or closed front or back, contain straps, laces or slip on, and work well in the warmer seasons.
Slip-Ons, or Loafers, are one of the most popular casual shoes for both men and women. Generally made of leather and following a moccasin pattern, the shoe is designed to simply slip on the foot, thus the name. Most have a tassel on the upper front of the shoe, though some have a slit or metal. In women’s fashion, the typical loafer is accentuated with a heel and a more feminine appearance.
Flats & Mary Janes are two types of women’s shoes that, depending on the style, can be worn as either dress or casual wear. Flats came into prominence when Audrey Hepburn wore them in Funny Face. Flats feature a canvas upper similar to a ballet shoe, with a thin heel. These shoes usually have an open top for slip-on ease, but can have a thin top strap. Mary-Janes were originally named after the Buster Brown character by the Brown Shoes Company. These shoes typically are rounded and closed all the way around and feature a single buckle-strap across the front. Today, numerous companies produce Mary-Janes in both flat and platform-style.
Two of the most common dress shoes for men are the Oxford and Monk Strap. Both of these shoes are constructed from leather and most commonly are in a brown and/or black color. The Oxford or Balmorals is an enclosed shoe with laces. Depending on the style and material, it can be used as a formal dress shoe or casual work shoe. On occasion the shoe can also have an additional leather toe cap. The monk shoe is a closed leather shoe with a single buckle strap across the top.
Platform shoes are any footwear that has a large, thick sole. These can include sandals and boots, as well as shoes like espadrilles, sneakers and creepers. Historically, platform shoes have been in use since ancient Greece; however they have seen a continuous rise in prominence since the 1970s - especially amongst young women and the counter culture. Today platform shoes can entail various high heels in sizes ranging from a few inches to over a foot in size.
Sandals are the oldest and simplest type of footwear, primarily consisting of a sole and some form of strap to hold the sole on the foot. Contemporary sandals for both men and women range in all types, sizes and colors. Popular sandals can come with thin soles, wedged soles (as seen in espadrilles) or even high heels. Traditionally, Sandals are made from leather, but can also contain rope, rubber or plastic.
Slingbacks are a type of open high heeled shoe consisting of an open or closed toe, and a single strap across the top of the heel. Depending on the style, the strap can be a single piece of fabric or a buckle. While these shoes all have a high heel, the overall style can differ. Slippers are a fun type of casual wear, used primarily during the evening as a comfort item. It is also used in early mornings to keep the feet warm while traversing the cool home, thus the name “houseshoe”; although it is not entirely uncommon to see them on the feet of students. Most slippers are an open-back shoe made from a soft material, so one can easily “slip in” their foot. Today slippers come in a variety of colors or styles, sometimes with plush cartoon characters forming the slipper itself.
Sneakers, also known as tennis shoes, are a form of athletic shoes, though they tend to focus less on athletic usage and more on casual wear. Due to the comfort and custom patterns sneakers can utilize, they have become commonplace in offices, schools and social settings. Skate shoes are a type of sneaker that is designed specifically for use with skateboards. Thus they are usually more durable and have a better grip than regular shoes. However they have become increasingly popular amongst non-skateboarders as casual wear for these features.
Stilettos and pumps are two of the most common forms of heeled women’s shoes. The primary difference between the two lies in the heel size. Stilettos usually feature a long thin heel which is supported by a metal shaft and ends in a metal or rubber tip. This can improve posture and accentuate the owner’s features; however this also makes them prone to breaking. Pumps are a closed, low cut dance show with a lower and wider heel than stilettos. They are common in both casual and formal settings.

When comfort is the highest priority, orthopedic shoes are the wisest choice. These are shoes designed solely (pun!) with comfort in mind. These shoes often cater to the elderly or otherwise challenged pedestrians, often equipped with easy Velcro straps to make putting them on and taking them off a simple process. Orthopedic shoes may also refer to specialty shoes designed for people dealing with foot injuries. For example, some orthopedic shoes feature an inflexible sole, preventing the foot from flexing.
